Overview
The Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives in Crisis Settings outreach training module is designed for clinical trainers conducting brief refresher training on providing long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) services and family planning counseling, particularly in crisis settings or with limited resources. The target audience for these is health care providers — including midwives, nurses, general practice physicians, obstetrician/gynecologists, and others — already familiar with LARCs, including insertion and removal of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and implants.
This LARC refresher training module contains high-quality, evidence-based, user-friendly materials and resources for designing, conducting, and evaluating training for family planning service providers in crisis settings. To ensure the provision of high-quality services that emphasize informed choice and consent, safety and effectiveness, client privacy and confidentiality, equity, and non-discrimination, this module provides an overview of long-acting contraceptives usually available in crisis settings, which is to be combined with The Balanced Counseling Strategy Plus: A Toolkit for Family Planning Service Providers Working in High STI/HIV Prevalence Settings developed by Population Council.
Additionally, the training includes discussions and activities that promote the sustainability of services and address ongoing training needs where there is high staff turnover. The course is designed for in-person training workshops in crisis settings with limited resources. The training can take place onsite or offsite in a nearby referral facility.

Course Units
The training module is divided into three units consisting of 13 sessions.
Unit 1
Session 1: Welcome and Introduction
During this session, participants will reflect on their expectations for the training and agree on ground rules.
Session 2: Overview of Humanitarian Principles and Accountability Framework
This session discusses the complexities of crisis settings and why global standards and principles for humanitarian intervention are important and have evolved over the years.
Session 3: Overview of Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs)
This session discusses the basic attributes of long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) methods and how to use the WHO Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC) for Contraceptive Use Wheel / App and Quick Reference Chart in recommending safe and effective contraception methods for clients with medical conditions.
Session 4: Family Planning Counseling (BCS+)
This session describes family planning counseling and how to use the Balanced Counseling Strategy (BCS+) job aids to assist a client in making an informed decision about whether to use contraception and which method to choose.
Unit 2
Session 5: Rights-Based Sexual and Reproductive Health Care
This session describes the fundamental principles of rights-based sexual and reproductive health care.
Session 6: Infection Prevention for Provision of LARC Services
This session explains standard precautions for infection control and prevention and the infection prevention practices recommended for the provision of LARC services.
Session 7: Pre-Practice Skills Assessment, Video & Demonstration
This session reviews the steps of loading, insertion, and removal of copper IUDs in the interval period and the steps of one-rod /two-rod Implant insertion and removal.
Session 8: Skills Lab – IUD and Implant Insertion and Removal Practice
During this session, participants will demonstrate the steps of loading, inserting, and removing a Copper IUD using the “no-touch” technique and the steps of inserting and removing one and/or two-rod implants using models.
Unit 3
Session 9: Values Clarification and Examining Attitudes
This session discusses how providers’ opinions, values, and attitudes can affect, positively or negatively, their relationship with clients and the services provided.
Session 10: Managing Side Effects and Potential Complications, and Addressing Myths and Rumors about LARC Methods
This session discusses the management of common side effects and potential complications, and how to address rumors and misconceptions associated with LARC methods.
Session 11: Skills Lab – IUD and Implant Insertion and Removal Practice
During this session, participants will demonstrate the steps of loading, inserting, and removing a Copper IUD using the “no-touch” technique and the steps of inserting and removing one and/or two-rod implants using models.
Session 12: Knowledge and Post-Practice Skills Assessment
During this session, participants will complete a knowledge assessment and have their post-training skills assessed for IUD and implant insertion and removal techniques.
Session 13: Next Steps and Closing
During this session, participants will discuss opportunities for ongoing skills practice and post-training activities, develop a simple action plan for LARC service provision, and explain how the training met their expectations and course objectives.
