In 2022, UNFPA and the Global Women's Institute launched a collaboration to examine gender-based violence (GBV) risk in relation to cash assistance. This collaboration resulted in an indicators guide that offers proxy indicators for use by non-GBV specialists, such as cash, monitoring and evaluation (M&E), or sectoral/program actors, for assessing GBV risks to women in cash interventions. The accompanying case study explores the findings and implications of the operational field research conducted in Iraq and Colombia to inform the development of these indicators.

To understand the pathway to care of women with severe abortion-related events in a fragile context, the researchers conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with women who obtained treatment at a referral hospital in Jigawa State, Nigeria, in 2020–2021, using the Three Delays Model (Thaddeus & Maine, 1994) to examine impediments in reaching care.

A powerful earthquake hit Afghanistan, 7 October, causing widespread destruction and devastating loss of lives. CARE Afghanistan Deputy Country Director Reshma Azmi described the impacts in the country as well as CARE's emergency response.

To document the COVID-19 response of a global SRHR programme (the Women’s Integrated Sexual Health programme), in-depth interviews were conducted between April and July 2021 with 22 key informants from implementing partners in Sierra Leone, Ethiopia and central or regional offices, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the third-party monitoring partner. This study has identified important lessons that can inform programming in future crises, including the need for immediate recognition of SRHR as essential, sustained support for staff, use of multiple mechanisms to reach marginalised groups, adequate funding for equity goals, and a better balance between the burden of reporting and accountability needs.

UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency is urgently appealing for US $14.4 million to address the immediate, emergency needs of people affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan’s Herat Province.

UNFPA estimates nearly 7,500 pregnant women have been affected by the quakes. To support them and others devastated by the disaster, the agency has deployed eight mobile health teams to Herat. Nearly 20,000 people were reached within ten days of the quake.
