A Training For Service Providers on Sexual and Reproductive Health in Emergencies: An Introduction to the Minimum Initial Service Package (MISP)

This training resource will guide facilitators through the various steps necessary to facilitate a three-day face-to-face training workshop on SRH in emergencies and the MISP. The training is designed for an audience of service providers and is one of three available training modules - tailored to three different audiences – on this topic.

In addition to covering the six objectives and the other priority activity of the MISP, this training also covers topics which are considered important for the implementation of the MISP and are also addressed in the Inter-Agency Field Manual on Reproductive Health in Crises, including:

• Fundamental principles of SRH programming in humanitarian settings;
• Inclusion and adolescent SRH; and
• Logistics and Monitoring.

The facilitator’s manual provides a daily agenda for training and a description of the key messages to cover. All group work and discussion activities and their instructions are provided in this manual. These activities and group discussions are designed to make learning more interactive.

Pre- and post-tests are included to provide insight into the base level of understanding so that facilitators can adapt the training or identify areas that may need emphasis.

At the close of the workshop, all participants should be able to:

1. Explain why it is important to address SRH in emergencies.
2. Define key terminology & concepts for providing SRH services in emergencies.
3. Demonstrate a clear understanding of the objectives and activities prescribed by the MISP and the skills needed to deliver these.
4. Identify challenges and solutions to delivering SRH service in emergencies.
5. Identify the competencies service providers need and the key role they must play to ensure the delivery of activities prescribed by the MISP.
6. Note: This training is intended to provide a clear overview of the MISP objectives and supportive elements. It is not a training that will provide the skills needed to implement the MISP. The training materials include links to additional resources and training packages that participants can explore if they want more knowledge and skills on particular objectives.
